HE-111 Bombing Guide
Manual bombing in Forgotten
Battles (without using the automatic bombsight) is
not easy, since no mention is being made of it in
the user's manual. I purpose to amend this by
proposing a kind of procedure.
I undertook a number of measures for several kinds
of loads (SC50, SC 70, SC500), which results are
given below, together with instructions for use. An
overall table is included with every found values.
Plane : He111 laden with 4SC500.
Parameters : Altitude 2000 m / IAS 270 km/h
Target: A castle
Before going into bombsight view, the plane must be
coarsely set towards the target
(indicator with three lines above the
turn-and-bank). Then the plane is stabilized with
the proper key :
Then the release altitude must be set.
In this case : 2000 m. But with auto-stabilization
Then the release altitude must be set. In this case
: 2000 m.
But with auto-stabilization, the plane will tend to
somewhat dive.
It is safe to start 500m higher than needed in order
to get at the right altitude by release-time.
TAS is set through the bombsight keys.
Speed will be set by 10km/h, so for TAS = 306,5
km/h, 310 will be displayed.
Refer to the chart at the end of the brief for
IAS/TAS matching.
Time to get to bombsight view.
The target must be spotted far in advance so that
last adjustments can be made in time with no hurry.
The angle is increased (something like 70 degrees).
With trim
and rudders, the path is precisely adjusted.
Once set on
a course to the target, the angle is set to 39°.
The target is then lost from sight and will reappear
only a few moments before bomb-release :
Just wait
for the target to get right in the cross.
Four clicks on the bomb-release key just before the
target reach the center of the cross :
You know the
rest, I expect : ................... BOOOOOOOMMMMM !
Two runs were done for every altitude and load, just
to get on the safe side.
Here are the results :
